Mangapwani Coral Cave and Slave Chambers Tour

Mangapwani is a town on Zanzibar’s northwest coast, about 25 km north of Stone Town. Built around 1880 within a cave, the Mangapwani Slave Chamber sits roughly 2 km up the coast from the Mangapwani Coral Cavern and is surrounded by indigenous trees such as breadfruit, rambutan, and fragrant shrubs.

This site served as a crucial transit point for captured slaves during the period following the abolition of slavery in 1873. Between 1880 and 1905, the chamber was used to conceal human cargo awaiting sale and shipment. Its name, Mangapwani, meaning “Arab Shore,” reflects the district’s historical Arab presence, as many used the area to hide slaves before transport.

Slavery was central to Zanzibar’s economy, with plantation owners depending on enslaved people to cultivate cloves and coconuts. Enslaved individuals served as domestic workers, soldiers, caravan porters, and concubines. While life was harsh and often brutal, some were assimilated into local families, bore children, and eventually gained freedom.

Following abolition, freed slaves sought to build new lives, claiming personal freedom and social respect. Many changed their names to disguise their origins, identifying instead as ‘Swahili’ to mark a fresh start and distance themselves from a painful past.
