Tour Plan
Stone Town is a site recognized by UNESCO for its historical significance. Having developed over the last millennium, it has been shaped by the various cultures and trades the Indian Ocean has bought to the town. Its buildings are a testament to the diverse cultures it has been influenced by. Its coral buildings, timber structures, and intricately carved wooden doors tell stories of the wealthy merchant families which the town was home to.
While in Stone Town, make sure to visit the Forodhani Gardens Market where there is a diverse selection of street food to choose from. It is a great place to eat dinner from and is open from 5—9 pm. Darajani Market is a lovely place to buy fresh spices and produce in the morning. The old fort, which was built in the 17th century is home to a myriad of shops and a small gallery. Each year, the Sauti Za Busara Music Festival is held there to promote and celebrate the music of different African cultures.
The Anglican Christ Church Cathedral and the Slave Market is a painful reminder of the slave trade that took place on the island during the 19th century, telling the history of the island's architectural practices. The Freddie Mercury Museum is in the home of the world-famous musician and provides a pre-fame glimpse into his life. Together, these sites encapsulate the unique atmosphere and history of Stone Town.
