Tour Plan
Discover the natural beauty of Jozani–Chwaka Bay National Park, the only national park in Zanzibar and home to the island’s largest remaining natural forest. Walk through peaceful forest trails surrounded by tropical trees, palms, and mangroves while encountering the famous Zanzibar red colobus monkeys, a rare species found only on the island. Along the mangrove boardwalks, you may also spot colorful butterflies and tropical birds while learning how this unique ecosystem protects Zanzibar’s coastline and rich biodiversity.
After exploring Jozani, the journey continues to Makunduchi Village, one of the oldest settlements in southern Zanzibar. Here you will experience authentic village life, visit local homes, and learn about traditional customs and daily activities of the local community. Makunduchi is also known for the Mwaka Kogwa Festival, a unique Shirazi New Year celebration held once a year, featuring symbolic stick fights, traditional music, dancing, and community prayers for peace and prosperity.
Important Notes
Makunduchi is a traditional village with strong cultural values.
- There are areas with specific community traditions and dress customs. When going to villages and places of worship, a little more respect for others and modesty in clothing is appreciated.
- Make sure to wear the right shoes for walking and the right clothes for the activities that will be done
Gifts are accepted
- Visitors are encouraged to bring small presents for children in the village, such as pens, colouring books, or other learning materials. These thoughtful gifts are always appreciated by the local community.
Mtende Beach is located in a small cove and features two large rock formations making the scenery incredible. Mtende Beach is one of the few beaches in Zanzibar that features the ability to watch the tides come in and out and how they change the scenery.
There is a large fun swing attached to one of the rock formations and I recommend going on it. The tide will rise and lower and it is fun to swing when the water is high. Mtende Beach offers stunning views of the rocks that surround the beach, and features a number of small creatures that live in the tide pools. The main features of Mtende Beach is that people can come to relax and than and they can enjoy going to the water. The beaches in Zanzibar are beautiful and Mtende Beach is no exception to that.
The tour concludes at the breathtaking Mtende Beach, a hidden paradise located in a small natural cove surrounded by dramatic rock formations. This peaceful beach is famous for its changing tides, crystal-clear waters, and spectacular views. During low tide you can walk along the sandy shore and explore small tidal pools, while high tide transforms the beach into a stunning lagoon. It is the perfect place to relax, enjoy the scenery, and experience one of Zanzibar’s most beautiful coastal landscapes before returning to your hotel
Things to Keep in Mind:
Mtende Beach is beautiful, but is not very accessible for those in wheelchairs, or people that need help walking. There are some areas with steep or uneven stairs. When the beach comes in, the water can be rough, and there are some treacherous rocks. There are also a lot of sea urchins, so be careful in the darker water. Please be careful and enjoy the beach!
