Prison lsland Tour, Nakupenda sandbank and Stone Town Tour
Explore Tours
This full-day excursion, running from morning until evening, combines three of Zanzibar’s most notable attractions: Prison Island, Nakupenda Sandbank, and the historic Stone Town. The itinerary offers a balance of natural scenery, beach relaxation, and cultural heritage, allowing visitors to experience several key aspects of the island in a single day.
The tour typically begins with a visit to Prison Island (Changuu Island), located about 5–6 km northwest of Stone Town. The island is known for its population of Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are more than a century old. These tortoises were originally a gift from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. The island also contains historical buildings linked to its former use as a quarantine station for yellow fever cases.

After exploring the island, the trip continues to Nakupenda Sandbank, a temporary sandbank that appears during low tide near Stone Town. The name Nakupenda means “I love you” in Swahili. Visitors usually spend time swimming, relaxing on the white sand, and enjoying the surrounding turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

The final part of the tour takes place in Stone Town, the historic center of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stone Town reflects centuries of cultural exchange between African, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influences. Key landmarks commonly visited include the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the former slave market site, and the birthplace of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the band Queen.

Tour Plan
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is located off the western coast of Zanzibar, just a short 30-minute boat ride from Stone Town. The island is surrounded by three smaller islands: Grave Island, Snake Island, and Bawe Island. Its main attraction is the famous giant tortoises, some of which can live for over 200 years.
Originally, the island was used as a detention site for rebellious slaves by the sultans from the 1860s until the end of the slave trade. Later, under the supervision of British First Minister Lloyd Mathews, a prison was built on the island in 1894. Despite its name, the facility was never used as a traditional prison; instead, it functioned as a quarantine station for potential yellow fever cases.
Today, Prison Island is a popular tourist destination, especially for its giant tortoise sanctuary. These Aldabra tortoises, imported from the Seychelles in the 19th century, are friendly and approachable. Visitors have the unique opportunity to feed and even pet these gentle giants, some of which are over a 100 years old. Beyond the tortoises, the island offers beautiful views and a tranquil escape just minutes away from the bustling streets of Stone Town.
After visiting prison island, you will be able to take a boat to the Nakupenda Sandbank, which is one of the most beautiful places in all of Zanzibar. The name of the Sandbank in Swahili means "I love you", a perfect name for a location with such beauty. At low tide the sandbank appears with stunnina white sand beach with turquoise clear water. It is the perfect location to hang out, swim and sunbathe or just spend time in a tranqui peace of the tropics. While here you will spend time on your ideal island getaway and enjoy a wonderful meal of fresh island catch seafood, tropical fruits and soft drinks.

After completing our visit to Nakupenda Sandbank, we continue our journey to Stone Town, where your unforgettable experience begins.
Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Zanzibar, showcases a rich history shaped by over a millennium of cultural exchanges and commerce in the Indian Ocean. The town's unique architecture merges Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European influences, prominently displayed in its coral ragstone and mangrove timber structures, along with intricately carved wooden doors that reflect the stories of affluent merchant families.
Highlights of Stone Town include the vibrant Forodhani Gardens Market, where locals and tourists indulge in an array of street food from 5 pm to 9 pm, and the traditional Darajani Market, ideal for experiencing fresh produce and spices in the early morning. The Old Fort, dating back to the late 17th century, features a gallery, curio market, and an amphitheater, hosting events like the Sauti za Busara Music Festival, which celebrates African music.
The Slave Market and the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral serve as poignant reminders of the island's 19th-century slave trade history and its architectural heritage. Lastly, the Freddie Mercury Museum, located in the home of the legendary musician, offers insights into his early life and cultural background before his rise to fame. Together, these sites encapsulate the extraordinary essence of Stone Town.
